CATHOLIC SCHOOL PRINCIPALS AND PRESIDENTS PLEDGE FOR PEACE

September 3, 2008

We, the Principals and Presidents of the Catholic elementary and high schools of the Archdiocese of Chicago, wish to express our abhorrence of the escalating violence on our streets. Young adults and children are suffering and dying before our eyes. We whole heartedly condemn these actions and express sincere sympathy to the families who have painfully faced the horrors of gun violence and attacks on family members. We pledge our solidarity with the entire educational community by praying for peace and by working for a consistent non-violent approach to resolving conflicts within our schools and neighborhoods. We resolve with our parents, staffs and students to create peaceful educational environments that respect and honor the dignity of every person.

The Catholic School Leaders of the Archdiocese of Chicago
Dear St. Rene Parent/Guardian,

Our students began the year working together, sharing a prayer for peace, and learning to be peacemakers in our world. We celebrated the angels in our lives with our Guardian Angel mass where we thanked all those who care for us here on earth. In October, we remembered the life of our patron, St. Rene, and we celebrated his life by sharing kindness with others.  During Red Ribbon week the students gave their problems and worries to God by writing letters.

In November, we remember those in our family who have passed away by creating a Remembrance Tree.  This tree contains leaves with the names and pictures of our family members and friends who have died.  The tree reminds us that we are part of a family, and that the love we share for our family and for God brings us together.

Now we are asked to show our love for God, by helping the poor and hungry.  As Jesus commanded his disciples to feed the five thousand, we are asked to help feed the hungry in our world. We fulfill this need through our support of the 6 th  grade food drive held during the month of November.

As this first trimester comes to a close, we reflect with pride on all that our students have  accomplished, but most especially for the gifts of peace, kindness, and caring that they bring to our world

Sincerely,

Paula Calvert, Principal
