I did not attend St. Rene school, but my family was a member of the church from its beginning (we moved from St. Symphorosa when St. Rene opened) until 1969. We lived on 64th St. between Nashville St. and Natchez St. I attended CCD classes and made my confirmation in St. Rene. My father, John Cologna, taught CCD and was a lay commentator at the Sunday Mass. I believe our priest's name was Father Ryan who frequently suppered at our home. My favoirte memory of St. Rene was the summer street dances for teens. St. Rene would hire local bands to play on Friday or Saturday nights in the parking lot of what is now the school. At the time the church sanctuary was located in the basement of the school. I am now 55 years old - but I will always remember those summer dances.

One of my most memorable times at St. Rene was when we as a class sang at the midnight mass. My friend Marikay Griffin used to play the organ for many of the holiday events and we used to go down into the church so she could practice on Saturdays.

In nine years at St. Rene, it's difficult to narrow it down to just one favorite memory. Coming from a pretty memorable group of graduates, no year was ever dull! And I learned some life long lessons, like the importance of long division and the reason that backpacks have TWO straps! Also, that little black comb they give you before you take your school picture may not always be such a good idea! I guess when it comes down to it, the friendships I made with both the students and staff mean the most to me. Besides, what other time in my life will green and gold polyester be fashionable??!!

Playing baseball in the new school parking lot-Having my girlfriend as May Queen in 1963. Fun with Fr Joe McDonnell, and Adam, the original janitor at the school. And putting on those lite green shirts and dark green uniform pants with the "X" ties that buttoned.

My favorite memory of St. Rene would have to be all the softball games. It would be 6:00 PM, perfectly warm outside, the church bells would start to play, and the first pitch was thrown. Then it would be and hour and a half of pure excitement and fun! You would also go to all your friends games as well and it seemed like all your friends and your friend's parents were out having a great time almost every day of the week! I wish I could come to the mass to celebrate Catholic Schools Week, but I'll be in another state this weekend.
